Obituary

Lakeview- Charles “Cork” Lucas, age 74, of Altona, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids. Cork was born on August 11, 1943, in Union City, Indiana, the son of William and Evelyn (Jewett) Lucas. He was raised in Union City until the tender age of 4 before moving to Lakeview, MI. Cork attended Altona’s country school and then graduated from Lakeview High School Class of 1961.
Cork honorably served his country in the Army; where he was stationed in Panama as a PFC from 1961 until 1963. Cork met Barbara Jean Carpenter, a friend of his sisters, at a basketball game. They were later married on August 20, 1966 at Brockway Wesleyan Church in Morley.
He was employed by Michigan Bell, which later became a part of AT&T, retiring in Dec. 1995. He was one of the telephone companies Office Switchmen and traveled all over Michigan as part of an electronic switchover crew. Over the years, his jobs included Telephone Lineman and Home Phone Installer. During Cork’s early years, he also worked for Robinson’s Furniture in Big Rapids, and Gibson’s in Greenville.
Cork enjoyed John Deere Tractors, working, and genealogy research. He always had tools in his truck and was working on something. He was a member of Brockway Wesleyan Church, and was very involved on local and district levels. He loved church maintenance and church activities in general. Cork worked with the church camp on the district level and he was a Hinton Twp. Assessor for over 20 years.
Cork will be missed by his loving wife, of 51 years, Barbara Lucas of Lakeview; children Jennifer (Bruce) Covey of Lakeview, Jeanette (Greg) Frump of Lakeview, Cheryl Lucas of Portland, IN, and Charity (Grant) Parsley of Canadian Lakes; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and another on the way; siblings Bill (Janice) Lucas of Cadillac, Pete Lucas (Sharon Pabreza) of Comstock Park, Martha Reed of Hersey, John (Sharon) Lucas of Lakeview, and Jane (Bill) Porter of Lakeview; several nieces, nephews, friends, and church family. Cork was preceded in death by his parents William and Evelyn Lucas.
Funeral services for Charles will be on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Brockway Wesleyan Church at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Lemire officiating. The family will accept friends on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the church. All are invited to a luncheon at the church following graveside services in Altona Cemetery. Those wishing to make a contribution in Cork’s memory are asked to consider the church.
