Obituary for Edwin Dale Winter

Edwin Dale Winter, age 83, of Lakeview, Michigan, died on May 26, 2018 at home. Edwin, “Ed”, was the son of Dick E. Winter and Grace Koster and was born in Grand Rapids Michigan on June 21, 1934.
On July 1, 1952, Ed married Nancy K. Zigterman in Holland, Michigan. Ed and Nancy raised five children: Sharyl, Luann, Gloria “Kay”, William, and Edwin in Lakeview, Michigan. They were married for 52 years before Nancy’s death in 2005.
Edwin had many careers, all of which he thoroughly enjoyed. His first adult job was as a salesman for Grocers Baking Company, from which he retired after 30 years. He loved seeing all his customers each day on his bread route.
Ed bought his first house when he was 19 years old; he renovated it and turned it into a two-family duplex. He continued buying and renovating houses, which became rental homes, for many years. He and Nancy worked hard even after long hours on his bread route.
He worked hard to be able to buy a small cottage for our family where our summer days were spent enjoying the water, skiing and swimming, and nights were spent around bonfires. Of course, that was after we got our daily work list completed. Through work and play, our summers at the cottage built wonderful memories of family and friends.
Following that retirement, he and Nancy moved to the Florida Keys where Ed managed the Marina at Fiesta Key KOA. The Florida Keys became his home away from home and he loved being there. He shared his love of the Keys with many of his friends and family. The Keys have been the favorite Winter family spot for decades.
After leaving his marina job, Ed moved back to Lakeview and began working with his sons at Four Seasons Exterminating. He continued to be happy to be able to work and contribute until his death, and he instilled that love in all his children.
Until we meet again, Ed will be deeply missed by his family: daughters, Luann (Jack) Koester and Gloria Kay Winter; and sons, William (Cindy) Winter and Edwin (Christine) Winter. His grandchildren: Jamy Johnston, Jared Johnston, Justin Johnston, Erin Clayton, Allan Griffith, Emily Tisdel, Jessie Winter, Mandie Smith, Travis Winter, Daniel Winter, and Pascal Winter; their spouses, partners, and many great-grandchildren. Edwin will also be missed by his sister, Judith Olree, and sister-in-law, Betty Morgan. Our family is grateful to his friend, Patti Burks, who cared for him and who will also miss him deeply.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Sharyl, and son-in-law, Kim Griffith; his parents, Grace and Dick Winter; parents-in-law, Catherine and William Zigterman; brother-in-law, Robert Olree; and sister-in-law, Marcia Mullins.
A private family memorial will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeview Community Fund.
