Obituary
Lakeview-George Wilford Goulet, age 91, passed away at his home on April 22, 2018, in Lakeview, Michigan. He was born August 6, 1926, in Ludington, the son of Dr. Leo and Elizabeth (Pomeroy) Goulet. George was raised in Ludington and graduated from St. Simons Catholic School. After graduation George entered the US Navy where he served as a medic during WWII. After the navy he attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and later transferred to CMU in Mt. Pleasant, where he earned his bachelors, masters, and specialist degrees. On June 10, 1950, he married the love of his life, Lois Ann O’Brien, who preceded him in death in 2014.
He spent 40 years working for Lakeview Community Schools, starting out as a bus driver, 5th grade teacher, and football coach. He later taught junior high science and spent the last 27 years of his career as the elementary principal. He was twice named outstanding Michigan principal. He was a member of the Michigan Elementary/Middle School Principal Association where he served terms as vice president as well as 7 years on the State Board of Directors. He also served two terms as president of the Region 9 MEMSPA.
George was an active member of the Lakeview community. He was a Montcalm County Red Cross water safety instructor and spent summers teaching swimming lessons in the morning and working as the lifeguard in the afternoons at Tamarack Lake. He was a Mariner Scout leader as well. During his career he was also a referee for football and basketball, and a baseball umpire. George was a devout member of St. Francis De Sales parish in Lakeview. There, he served on the diocese liturgical commission, was a Cursillo leader, and taught religious education classes. There were many hobbies that George had throughout his life but golf was the activity he loved the most. He was a member of a few golf leagues which he enjoyed as long as he was able.
He will be missed by his seven children; Kathy (Steve) Hoeksema, Larry, Karen, Marilyn, Theresa, George (Linda) Goulet, and Lois Goulet-Federau, 18 grand children and 15 great grandchildren.
